Lingering At The Gate
Lord though I'm feeble and old,
My hair silver no longer gold,
Though my life's light is fading
fast
I have just one last favor to
ask.
Let me linger by the way
Just a few precious days,
Grant me just a little while
Before I go that final mile.
Childlike favors I pray of you
Ere my time on Earth is through,
Simple matters of mind and heart
Before my heavenly journey
starts.
Let me smell a fragrant rose
Ere I lie where the wild ones
grow,
Let me hear the songbirds sing
And distant church bells ring.
Let me feel the warmth of
sunshine
Upon my back just one more time,
Let me gaze at the black velvet
sky
As shooting stars flash quickly
by.
Let me watch a glorious sunrise
As heavens open before my eyes,
Let me witness a special sunset
With brilliant colors not seen
yet.
Touch my eyes that I clearly see
Loved ones gathered round me,
Give me breath to say goodbyes,
Give me courage to bear their
cries.
I want to hug my children once
again
Before my soul to heaven ascends
And say I love them just once
more
Before you close my lifetime
door.
Let me hold my wife in a last
embrace
And kiss the sorrow from her
face,
Give her the strength to carry
on
And ease her grief when I am
gone.
Lord God in heaven I Pray
You grace me with a few more
days
Then I'll be ready to skyward
fly
To my eternal home in the sky.
